What is Augmentative & Alternative Communication?

or AAC for short!

AAC includes all forms of communication, other than verbal speech that we use to communicate thoughts, needs, wants and ideas. It is also used to support somebody’s understanding of language.

AAC is used:

  • to support an individuals verbal speech when their speech is hard to understand

  • to support comprehension

  • instead of speech when an individual has little or no speech

There are many different systems we can use to communicate:

  • gestures, facial expressions, body language, pointing, sign

  • communication books, boards, text

  • communication devices and iPad apps
